Looking for your perfect wedding dress should be an exciting, fun and, once in a lifetime experience! We want each of our Missies to enjoy the process and to help you out we’ve come up with six questions you should ask your bridal consultant during your initial appointments to help you understand how to buy a wedding dress.
Can you suggest what style of dress will work on my body shape?
A great bridal consultant should be able to look at your body shape and proportions and know what style of dress will work best on your body. Taking into account your height, body shape and complexion, they will be able to guide you, but you should always consider what style of dress suits your personality and personal style, as well as your venue and overall wedding style. Also remember to think about what areas of your body you want to show off, should that be your back, shoulders or arms – and of course maybe the areas you want to disguise. The more information you offer your bridal consultant, the easier the process will be for everyone.
After I say yes to my dress how many further appointments will I need?
Generally you will need around three appointments – the first one being when you find the perfect dress, the second when your dress arrives in store and any alterations are discussed and measurements and tweaks made, and the third before your wedding day to ensure all alterations are correct and that your dress looks perfect. If you are having major alterations, additional appointments will be required.
What are your payment terms?
Most bridal boutiques will ask for a 50% deposit before they order your dress, and the further 50% on delivery, although this can vary in every boutique. If you need a more detailed payment plan ask if this is an option, you won’t know if you don’t ask!
Can you order a dress from my favourite designer if you don’t already have it in stock?
Most bridal boutiques now run trunk shows or designer weekends for each of their designers stocked. During these events usually the salon will have the entire current collection for the duration and will offer special discounts if you purchase during your appointment. If you have a particular designer in mind it’s a good idea to keep an eye on the bridal boutiques that stock it for their upcoming bridal events.
Do you offer alterations in house?
Not all bridal boutiques offer this service but should be able to recommend reputable dressmakers. We chatted to Aoife from Ophelia Bridal last week and she gave us a great guideline price for alterations – you can check the feature out here.
How long will it take for my wedding dress to arrive?
Every designer will have a different timescale but generally most will need six to nine months delivery time, so it’s a good idea to get looking well before you need it! We always suggest 12-18 months is a good timeframe.
